Introduction

There’s something magical about the Aberdare Ranges—misty forests, moorlands that stretch
endlessly, and trails that test both body and spirit. Among its hidden treasures lies the Seven
Ponds, the fourth-highest peak in the Aberdares. I joined a hike with United Nomads, and the
experience was nothing short of unforgettable.

The Early Morning Start

The adventure began long before daylight. At 3:00 a.m., I left home, backpack strapped and
excitement buzzing beneath the sleepiness. The van ride was quiet at first, the roads empty,
the world still deep in slumber.

Midway through the journey, we stopped at a roadside café for coffee and snacks. The hot
drinks were a blessing against the biting cold, and the short break gave us the energy boost
we needed. Jokes and chatter began to flow as the caffeine kicked in

By 7:30 a.m., we finally arrived at the park gate. Mist hung low over the forest, the air crisp
and cool. After a quick briefing, some stretches, and adjusting backpacks, our group of
strangers turned into teammates ready for the challenge.

Into the Moorlands

By 8:00 a.m., boots hit the trail. The first stretch was gentle, giving us a chance to warm up.
Lush green moorlands spread out like a giant carpet, dotted with giant lobelias and
everlasting flowers. The air was thin—reminding us of the altitude—but every breath felt
purer than anything in the city.
I joked, “If I survive today without collapsing, someone better serve me a full meal!” The
group burst into laughter—it set the tone for a hike filled with shared stories and jokes.

The Climb Gets Real

Two hours in, the incline grew sharper. The trail tested our legs and lungs. Some hikers
slowed down, but the team’s spirit was strong. The female doctor in our group reminded us:
“Hydrate, small sips… and pace yourselves. This isn’t a race—it’s endurance.”
Her calm advice kept us steady. The higher we went, the more the mist swallowed the
landscape. It felt like hiking inside the clouds.
One hiker whispered between breaths, “These slopes are no joke—I feel like the mountain is
testing me.” Another laughed, replying, “Wait until you see the view. It’s worth every step.”

Reaching the Ponds

After hours of trekking, the reward appeared—the Seven Ponds. Nestled high in the
moorlands, the crystal-clear ponds shimmered under soft sunlight, surrounded by rugged
terrain and alpine vegetation. It was surreal, almost sacred.
We dropped our bags, caught our breath, took photos, and sat in silence to soak in the
moment. A quiet breeze swept across the ponds, carrying with it the satisfaction of every
aching muscle.
One hiker sighed happily, “This is the kind of silence I wish I could bottle up and carry
home.”

The Descent: Rain, Fog, and Teamwork

Just as we began our descent, the skies broke open. Heavy rain pounded the trail, turning it
muddy and slippery. To make things even more challenging, a thick fog rolled in, limiting
visibility to just a few meters.
It was no longer about photos or chatter—it was about careful steps, helping each other
across slick rocks, and trusting the hiker in front of you. Despite the weather, the United
Nomads stuck together, guiding and encouraging one another down the treacherous path.
“Watch your step here!” someone called out through the mist.
Another voice added, “We may be soaked, but this is what makes it memorable.”
Laughter still echoed, even in the storm, especially whenever someone slipped and got back
up with muddy pants and a smile.

The Reward: A Hot Meal

By the time we reached the gate, soaked and shivering, the rain had eased. We were tired,
muddy, and completely drained—but our spirits were higher than ever.
And then came the moment we had all been waiting for—a steaming hot meal of rice and
chicken. Sitting together, sharing food and laughter, it felt like the perfect ending to a tough
but beautiful day.
I couldn’t resist declaring, “I’ve earned this rice and chicken—don’t argue with me!” The
group burst into laughter once again, sealing the memory of a day well spent.

The Drive Back

With full stomachs and tired bodies, we finally packed into the van for the long drive home.
At first, the chatter was loud—everyone reliving the funniest slips, the thick fog, and the
moment the ponds came into view.
But slowly, exhaustion won. Some dozed off with jackets pulled over their heads, others
leaned against the windows watching the mist roll past. The van was filled with soft snores
and the peaceful silence that only comes after a day of giving your all to the mountain.
I sat back, replaying the entire journey in my mind, grateful for the challenge, the beauty, and
the bond created with the United Nomads.

Reflection

The Seven Ponds hike is more than just a physical challenge. It’s a reminder of nature’s raw
beauty, of how strangers can turn into teammates, and of the resilience hidden within us. At
over 3,800 meters above sea level, you don’t just hike—you grow.
If you’re looking for a hike that’s tough but rewarding, breathtaking yet humbling, the Seven
Ponds should be on your bucket list. Just remember to pack good boots, a rain jacket, snacks,
and a sense of humor. The mountain always rewards those who respect it.
